The village is in the dales between Bakewell (6 miles) and Matlock (4 miles) and local attractions include Chatsworth (5 miles), Haddon Hall (4 miles), Matlock Bath (5 miles) with its cable cars plus Crich Tramway museum, Peak railway, Tissington Trail, High Peak Trail, Limestone Way and the Derbyshire Dales.
Within the Winster Conservation Area the Cottage and adjacent Heathcote House built in 1672 are Grade 2 Listed. The village prospered in the 1700's building fine, stone Georgian architecture along Main Street and many stone cottages rising up the hill through a maze of alleyways and footpaths leading out of the village into the surrounding hills and dales.
